Whether you are meeting Bengali for the first time or finding your way back, you do not need to learn everything at once. Start small and keep going.
1. Get to know the letters
Bengali is written from left to right. Consonants can combine, and vowel signs may appear before, after, above or below a consonant on the page. Start by recognising a few letters, then practise them in real words.

2. Learn something you can use today
Greetings, thanks and simple questions make good first steps. Read the Bengali beside an English meaning, then practise with a speaker who can help with pronunciation.

3. Build a small, personal vocabulary
Choose five useful words: a person, a place, a thing, an action and a feeling. Look them up, save them and use them in a short sentence.
4. Make it a habit
A few minutes of reading or typing regularly can be easier to sustain than an occasional long session. Try the typing exercise and return to your saved words.
Give yourself a clear next step
