There are two common ways to enter Bengali: a keyboard layout with Bengali letters assigned to keys, or a phonetic input method that converts Roman keystrokes into Bengali suggestions.
Use the keyboard on your device
Open your device’s language and keyboard settings, add Bengali if available, and choose an input layout. The exact steps and available layouts depend on your operating system and version.
Try phonetic input online
Google Input Tools ↗ provides an online interface for choosing a language and input method. Choose Bengali where available, then test a few familiar words. Phonetic suggestions still need checking.
Keep it comfortable
- Choose one layout and practise it regularly before switching.
- Learn how to change between Bengali and English on your device.
- Check that the result is Unicode text you can copy and search.
- Download software only from its official publisher; avoid bundled installers from unfamiliar download sites.
Check your setup with one short sentence
আমি বাংলা শিখছি।
Try typing this sentence in a plain-text field, then copy and paste it into another application. Check spaces, vowel signs and punctuation. A keyboard layout controls input; a font controls how the resulting text is drawn.
If the result displays correctly, move to sentence practice. If it shows boxes or broken letters, use the Bengali display checklist before installing more software.
