Banga Bazar:

This is an extremely favourite places for shopping for the foreigners living in Dhaka. This market is full of cheap ready-made garments, which are produced in the local garments factories for export. It is located just a block west of Gulistan bus ­station and on the south-east corner of Curzon Hall of the Dhaka University. Some of the clothes may have small flaws but most of them are over-runs.

New Market:

Another well-known and favourite market is the Government New Market. You can find almost anything in this market including books, maps, electrical items, kitchen items, cutlaries, ready-made garments, saris, ornaments, shoes, household items, and groceries. Ready-made salwar kameez (a long dress-like tunic worn by women over baggy trousers) and other local dresses are sold at a very cheap rate. This market is located at the Nilkhet area near the Elephant Road.


Aarong is the biggest brand in quality handicrafts in Bangladesh. It is the retail branch of the world famous NGO, BRAC (Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee). BRAC aims to create employment for economically and socially marginalized people of Bangladesh by producing quality handicrafts and selling them through their own outlets located in many parts of the country and the most well-known branches are located at Lalmatia (near Dhanmondi and the National Parliament house), Gulshan and Chittagong.
